Lila Stern-Shewry

In Ashdown Forest, in her studio about 30 miles (50kms) South of London Lila Stern-Shewry designs and makes jewellery. Using Sterling Silver and large semi-precious stones, she creates large abstract “organic” forms. Using techniques such as granulation and wirework, the stones are surrounded by unique designs. Reticulation and other ‘texture creating’ and oxidising techniques are prominent. Weaving and knitting with fine silver wire add another dimension to her work. The stones she incorporates into her work vary from high quality faceted stones such as aquamarine and tourmaline, cabochon ‘smooth polished of many different types of stone and also rough and semi polished pieces. In addition her new collection will feature items with antique Roman glass from the Middle East from 2000 years ago. Lila Stern-Shewry's range of items focuses on rings and earrings, bracelets and pendants with a selection of tiaras, chokers and brooches. Prices start around £40 ($70) through to £4,000 ($7000) most rings range from £60 ($105) through to £600 ($1050) and include sizing to the chosen finger. All of the items are individually handmade by Lila Stern-Shewry.
History

Lila Stern-Shewry was born in Israel in 1954 in a Kibbutz in the Jordan Valley. Her childhood was influenced by the nature around her, and being one of the first children in the Kibbutz that had just been built there were a lot of characters from all around the World and very enthusiastic parents affected her upbringing in searching for different form and experience in life. Lila Stern-Shewry was studying Philosophy, Literature, Drama, Painting and Occult studies such as Astrology and palmistry. One day she was walking in the street and she heard an inside voice very clearly telling her ‘Go study the art of jewellery!’ So she went. In 1990 she finished a certificate course for Jewellery and Silversmithing at the College of Technology, Jerusalem. In 1991 she moved with her family to England and started designing and making jewellery. Her main selling venues are craft fairs during the year. Lila also sells in her gallery on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, when not at events. In the Summer both Lila Stern-Shewry and her husband Andy take part in different festivals because they love to be outside and be part of the celebration of Summer. They love where they live in a rural place that gives Lila Stern-Shewry the inspiration and the silence of the nature to create her unusual and contemporary jewellery pieces. Lila also designs bespoke rings for wedding or engagement as well as other jewels for the Bride and Groom, such as necklaces, tiaras, earrings and cuffinks.
